Soil Erosion – Causes, Effects & Solutions

It causes soil erosion by causing soil movement and detachment due to wind, water, and human interaction.

Cause & Effect

Preparation, awareness, and planning are the key to preventing erosion on your jobsite. This highlights how important it is to thoroughly evaluate the substrate.

1. Splash erosion:

Rain hitting a substrate causes water erosion. It breaks down aggregate and scatters soil particles that are up to 60cm high. These soil particles are then displaced 1.5m from where they were pushed.


2. Sheet erosion:


Uneven soil loss can result from splash erosion. Unproductive soil can result if nutrients are not removed.


3. Rill erosion:


Direct force of water on a substrate. This can also affect soil development and decrease landform sustainability.


4. Tunnel Erosion:


Permeation of water through soil cracks, holes or root decay can cause erosion. This can lead to tunnels beneath the substrate. However, the tunnel's surface structure is unaffected. The tunnel's top layer collapses as a result.


5. Wind Erosion


Wind erosion is caused by high-velocity winds moving across a substrate. This causes the loss of topsoil. This causes the soil to become unsuitable for cultivation.
